With traffic jams, driving restrictions and the costs associated with owning a vehicle, more and more city dwellers are turning to carsharing. Local councils are also in favour of this solution, as it enables communities to access a wider range of transport options. How does the \u201cback office\u201d work?\u00a0How do operators and local councils reach an agreement about the roll-out of a carsharing service? What criteria need to be taken into account to make it happen and ensure it runs smoothly? But what is meant by this term? If we refer to a dictionary, we learn that carsharing consists of \u201cthe providing of self-service vehicles to users for the duration and destination of their choice.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When interviewing Laurence B\u00e9chon, Director of Mobilize&#8217;s Mobility Services, we were told\u00a0 that <\/span><b>carsharing differs<\/b> <b>from traditional car<\/b> <b>rental<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by making a vehicle <\/span><b>available<\/b> <b>24\/7 to vehicles<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for trips lasting minutes or days. Additionally, users do not need to pick up keys, as they can unlock and lock vehicles with their smartphone. They are invoiced for <\/span><b>all related charges<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including charging and insurance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We also found out that there are two types of carsharing models \u2013 <\/span><b>free-floating systems<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (like Zity by Mobilize) and <\/span><b>station-based systems<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (like Mobilize Share).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Zity by Mobilize<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a <\/span><b>free-floating carsharing solution<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The vehicles are available on demand without fixed on-street pick-up and drop-off locations. There is no need to book a specific vehicle for a specified amount of time. Users can end their trip <\/span><b>whenever and wherever<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> they like within a designated area. They can use the vehicles for short one-way trips. Most trips do not last more than two or three hours.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Mobilize Share<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a <\/span><b>station-based carsharing solution.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The vehicles can be pre-booked for a set amount of time to ensure that a mobility solution is available when needed. They need to be picked up from and dropped back to a designated location which can be for both parking and charging the vehicles, as it is the case in Nice.<\/span><\/p>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"cp-title-paragraph\">\n    <div class=\"teq-container -narrow\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"title-introduction showUp\">\n\t\t\t\tAre free-floating and station-based services suitable for all urban areas?\t\t\t<\/h2>\n\t\t        <div class=\"paragraphe showUp\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<ul>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/ul>\n\t\t\t        <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n\n<div class=\"cp-intro-paragraph\">\n    <div class=\"teq-container -narrow\">\n        \t\t\t<div class=\"sub-title-intro showUp\">\n\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Laurence B\u00e9chon also explained that carsharing services work best in <\/span><b>medium-sized to large urban areas.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Carsharing complements other (public and private) transport options available in large cities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before operators can launch a carsharing service in a large city, they must take various factors into consideration, such as the number of inhabitants and jobs, density, jobs-housing balance, existing transport accessibility and efficiency, as well as competition. To attract and retain customers in a competitive landscape, these services need to be <\/span><b>reasonably priced and simple to use<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and allow users to park the vehicles easily and for free. According to Jos\u00e9 Barrios, Operations Manager at Zity Madrid:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #f84300;\"><em>\u201cFree-floating carsharing services like Zity by Mobilize suit large cities with over 500,000\u00a0inhabitants. Ensuring a certain number of vehicles are available per kilometre is key. A carsharing service can be classed as efficient if users can access a vehicle less than 300\u00a0m away. Jos\u00e9 Barrios explained that Zity \u2013 an independent company separate from Renault Group\u2019s distribution network \u2013 has premises spanning 3 000\u00a0m\u00b2 and employs 70\u00a0people who keep the service running.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Station-based services, such as <\/span><b>Mobilize Share<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, are better suited to <\/span><b>medium-density urban areas,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> where people would only occasionally need to use carsharing services. Our investigation also took us to Nice, a city with around 340,000\u00a0inhabitants.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #f84300;\"><em>\u201cThere are 62\u00a0electric vehicles in the Mobilize Share fleet in Nice, which is enough to meet local residents\u2019 mobility needs. Their trips tend to last longer than those of free-floating carshare users.
